Fascist America in Ten Easy Steps

by Naomi Wolf
from The Guardian

Last autumn, there was a military coup in Thailand. The leaders of the coup took a number of steps, rather systematically, as if they had a shopping list. In a sense, they did. Within a matter of days, democracy had been closed down: the coup leaders declared martial law, sent armed soldiers into residential areas, took over radio and TV stations, issued restrictions on the press, tightened some limits on travel, and took certain activists into custody.

They were not figuring these things out as they went along. If you look at history, you can see that there is essentially a blueprint for turning an open society into a dictatorship. That blueprint has been used again and again in more and less bloody, more and less terrifying ways. But it is always effective. It is very difficult and arduous to create and sustain a democracy - but history shows that closing one down is much simpler. You simply have to be willing to take the 10 steps.

As difficult as this is to contemplate, it is clear, if you are willing to look, that each of these 10 steps has already been initiated today in the United States by the Bush administration.

Because Americans like me were born in freedom, we have a hard time even considering that it is possible for us to become as unfree - domestically - as many other nations. Because we no longer learn much about our rights or our system of government - the task of being aware of the constitution has been outsourced from citizens' ownership to being the domain of professionals such as lawyers and professors - we scarcely recognise the checks and balances that the founders put in place, even as they are being systematically dismantled. Because we don't learn much about European history, the setting up of a department of "homeland" security - remember who else was keen on the word "homeland" - didn't raise the alarm bells it might have.

It is my argument that, beneath our very noses, George Bush and his administration are using time-tested tactics to close down an open society. It is time for us to be willing to think the unthinkable - as the author and political journalist Joe Conason, has put it, that it can happen here. And that we are further along than we realise.

Conason eloquently warned of the danger of American authoritarianism. I am arguing that we need also to look at the lessons of European and other kinds of fascism to understand the potential seriousness of the events we see unfolding in the US.

1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy

After we were hit on September 11 2001, we were in a state of national shock. Less than six weeks later, on October 26 2001, the USA Patriot Act was passed by a Congress that had little chance to debate it; many said that they scarcely had time to read it. We were told we were now on a "war footing"; we were in a "global war" against a "global caliphate" intending to "wipe out civilisation". There have been other times of crisis in which the US accepted limits on civil liberties, such as during the civil war, when Lincoln declared martial law, and the second world war, when thousands of Japanese-American citizens were interned. But this situation, as Bruce Fein of the American Freedom Agenda notes, is unprecedented: all our other wars had an endpoint, so the pendulum was able to swing back toward freedom; this war is defined as open-ended in time and without national boundaries in space - the globe itself is the battlefield. "This time," Fein says, "there will be no defined end."

Creating a terrifying threat - hydra-like, secretive, evil - is an old trick. It can, like Hitler's invocation of a communist threat to the nation's security, be based on actual events (one Wisconsin academic has faced calls for his dismissal because he noted, among other things, that the alleged communist arson, the Reichstag fire of February 1933, was swiftly followed in Nazi Germany by passage of the Enabling Act, which replaced constitutional law with an open-ended state of emergency). Or the terrifying threat can be based, like the National Socialist evocation of the "global conspiracy of world Jewry", on myth.

It is not that global Islamist terrorism is not a severe danger; of course it is. I am arguing rather that the language used to convey the nature of the threat is different in a country such as Spain - which has also suffered violent terrorist attacks - than it is in America. Spanish citizens know that they face a grave security threat; what we as American citizens believe is that we are potentially threatened with the end of civilisation as we know it. Of course, this makes us more willing to accept restrictions on our freedoms.

2. Create a gulag

Once you have got everyone scared, the next step is to create a prison system outside the rule of law (as Bush put it, he wanted the American detention centre at Guantánamo Bay to be situated in legal "outer space") - where torture takes place.

At first, the people who are sent there are seen by citizens as outsiders: troublemakers, spies, "enemies of the people" or "criminals". Initially, citizens tend to support the secret prison system; it makes them feel safer and they do not identify with the prisoners. But soon enough, civil society leaders - opposition members, labour activists, clergy and journalists - are arrested and sent there as well.

This process took place in fascist shifts or anti-democracy crackdowns ranging from Italy and Germany in the 1920s and 1930s to the Latin American coups of the 1970s and beyond. It is standard practice for closing down an open society or crushing a pro-democracy uprising.

With its jails in Iraq and Afghanistan, and, of course, Guantánamo in Cuba, where detainees are abused, and kept indefinitely without trial and without access to the due process of the law, America certainly has its gulag now. Bush and his allies in Congress recently announced they would issue no information about the secret CIA "black site" prisons throughout the world, which are used to incarcerate people who have been seized off the street.

Gulags in history tend to metastasise, becoming ever larger and more secretive, ever more deadly and formalised. We know from first-hand accounts, photographs, videos and government documents that people, innocent and guilty, have been tortured in the US-run prisons we are aware of and those we can't investigate adequately.

But Americans still assume this system and detainee abuses involve only scary brown people with whom they don't generally identify. It was brave of the conservative pundit William Safire to quote the anti-Nazi pastor Martin Niemöller, who had been seized as a political prisoner: "First they came for the Jews." Most Americans don't understand yet that the destruction of the rule of law at Guantánamo set a dangerous precedent for them, too.

By the way, the establishment of military tribunals that deny prisoners due process tends to come early on in a fascist shift. Mussolini and Stalin set up such tribunals. On April 24 1934, the Nazis, too, set up the People's Court, which also bypassed the judicial system: prisoners were held indefinitely, often in isolation, and tortured, without being charged with offences, and were subjected to show trials. Eventually, the Special Courts became a parallel system that put pressure on the regular courts to abandon the rule of law in favour of Nazi ideology when making decisions.

3. Develop a thug caste

When leaders who seek what I call a "fascist shift" want to close down an open society, they send paramilitary groups of scary young men out to terrorise citizens. The Blackshirts roamed the Italian countryside beating up communists; the Brownshirts staged violent rallies throughout Germany. This paramilitary force is especially important in a democracy: you need citizens to fear thug violence and so you need thugs who are free from prosecution.

The years following 9/11 have proved a bonanza for America's security contractors, with the Bush administration outsourcing areas of work that traditionally fell to the US military. In the process, contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars have been issued for security work by mercenaries at home and abroad. In Iraq, some of these contract operatives have been accused of involvement in torturing prisoners, harassing journalists and firing on Iraqi civilians. Under Order 17, issued to regulate contractors in Iraq by the one-time US administrator in Baghdad, Paul Bremer, these contractors are immune from prosecution

Yes, but that is in Iraq, you could argue; however, after Hurricane Katrina, the Department of Homeland Security hired and deployed hundreds of armed private security guards in New Orleans. The investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill interviewed one unnamed guard who reported having fired on unarmed civilians in the city. It was a natural disaster that underlay that episode - but the administration's endless war on terror means ongoing scope for what are in effect privately contracted armies to take on crisis and emergency management at home in US cities.

Thugs in America? Groups of angry young Republican men, dressed in identical shirts and trousers, menaced poll workers counting the votes in Florida in 2000. If you are reading history, you can imagine that there can be a need for "public order" on the next election day. Say there are protests, or a threat, on the day of an election; history would not rule out the presence of a private security firm at a polling station "to restore public order".

4. Set up an internal surveillance system

In Mussolini's Italy, in Nazi Germany, in communist East Germany, in communist China - in every closed society - secret police spy on ordinary people and encourage neighbours to spy on neighbours. The Stasi needed to keep only a minority of East Germans under surveillance to convince a majority that they themselves were being watched.

In 2005 and 2006, when James Risen and Eric Lichtblau wrote in the New York Times about a secret state programme to wiretap citizens' phones, read their emails and follow international financial transactions, it became clear to ordinary Americans that they, too, could be under state scrutiny.

In closed societies, this surveillance is cast as being about "national security"; the true function is to keep citizens docile and inhibit their activism and dissent.

5. Harass citizens' groups

The fifth thing you do is related to step four - you infiltrate and harass citizens' groups. It can be trivial: a church in Pasadena, whose minister preached that Jesus was in favour of peace, found itself being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, while churches that got Republicans out to vote, which is equally illegal under US tax law, have been left alone.

Other harassment is more serious: the American Civil Liberties Union reports that thousands of ordinary American anti-war, environmental and other groups have been infiltrated by agents: a secret Pentagon database includes more than four dozen peaceful anti-war meetings, rallies or marches by American citizens in its category of 1,500 "suspicious incidents". The equally secret Counterintelligence Field Activity (Cifa) agency of the Department of Defense has been gathering information about domestic organisations engaged in peaceful political activities: Cifa is supposed to track "potential terrorist threats" as it watches ordinary US citizen activists. A little-noticed new law has redefined activism such as animal rights protests as "terrorism". So the definition of "terrorist" slowly expands to include the opposition.

6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release

This scares people. It is a kind of cat-and-mouse game. Nicholas D Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, the investigative reporters who wrote China Wakes: the Struggle for the Soul of a Rising Power, describe pro-democracy activists in China, such as Wei Jingsheng, being arrested and released many times. In a closing or closed society there is a "list" of dissidents and opposition leaders: you are targeted in this way once you are on the list, and it is hard to get off the list.

In 2004, America's Transportation Security Administration confirmed that it had a list of passengers who were targeted for security searches or worse if they tried to fly. People who have found themselves on the list? Two middle-aged women peace activists in San Francisco; liberal Senator Edward Kennedy; a member of Venezuela's government - after Venezuela's president had criticised Bush; and thousands of ordinary US citizens.

Professor Walter F Murphy is emeritus of Princeton University; he is one of the foremost constitutional scholars in the nation and author of the classic Constitutional Democracy. Murphy is also a decorated former marine, and he is not even especially politically liberal. But on March 1 this year, he was denied a boarding pass at Newark, "because I was on the Terrorist Watch list".

"Have you been in any peace marches? We ban a lot of people from flying because of that," asked the airline employee.

"I explained," said Murphy, "that I had not so marched but had, in September 2006, given a lecture at Princeton, televised and put on the web, highly critical of George Bush for his many violations of the constitution."

"That'll do it," the man said.

Anti-war marcher? Potential terrorist. Support the constitution? Potential terrorist. History shows that the categories of "enemy of the people" tend to expand ever deeper into civil life.

James Yee, a US citizen, was the Muslim chaplain at Guantánamo who was accused of mishandling classified documents. He was harassed by the US military before the charges against him were dropped. Yee has been detained and released several times. He is still of interest.

Brandon Mayfield, a US citizen and lawyer in Oregon, was mistakenly identified as a possible terrorist. His house was secretly broken into and his computer seized. Though he is innocent of the accusation against him, he is still on the list.

It is a standard practice of fascist societies that once you are on the list, you can't get off.

7. Target key individuals

Threaten civil servants, artists and academics with job loss if they don't toe the line. Mussolini went after the rectors of state universities who did not conform to the fascist line; so did Joseph Goebbels, who purged academics who were not pro-Nazi; so did Chile's Augusto Pinochet; so does the Chinese communist Politburo in punishing pro-democracy students and professors.

Academe is a tinderbox of activism, so those seeking a fascist shift punish academics and students with professional loss if they do not "coordinate", in Goebbels' term, ideologically. Since civil servants are the sector of society most vulnerable to being fired by a given regime, they are also a group that fascists typically "coordinate" early on: the Reich Law for the Re-establishment of a Professional Civil Service was passed on April 7 1933.

Bush supporters in state legislatures in several states put pressure on regents at state universities to penalise or fire academics who have been critical of the administration. As for civil servants, the Bush administration has derailed the career of one military lawyer who spoke up for fair trials for detainees, while an administration official publicly intimidated the law firms that represent detainees pro bono by threatening to call for their major corporate clients to boycott them.

Elsewhere, a CIA contract worker who said in a closed blog that "waterboarding is torture" was stripped of the security clearance she needed in order to do her job.

Most recently, the administration purged eight US attorneys for what looks like insufficient political loyalty. When Goebbels purged the civil service in April 1933, attorneys were "coordinated" too, a step that eased the way of the increasingly brutal laws to follow.

8. Control the press

Italy in the 1920s, Germany in the 30s, East Germany in the 50s, Czechoslovakia in the 60s, the Latin American dictatorships in the 70s, China in the 80s and 90s - all dictatorships and would-be dictators target newspapers and journalists. They threaten and harass them in more open societies that they are seeking to close, and they arrest them and worse in societies that have been closed already.

The Committee to Protect Journalists says arrests of US journalists are at an all-time high: Josh Wolf (no relation), a blogger in San Francisco, has been put in jail for a year for refusing to turn over video of an anti-war demonstration; Homeland Security brought a criminal complaint against reporter Greg Palast, claiming he threatened "critical infrastructure" when he and a TV producer were filming victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. Palast had written a bestseller critical of the Bush administration.

Other reporters and writers have been punished in other ways. Joseph C Wilson accused Bush, in a New York Times op-ed, of leading the country to war on the basis of a false charge that Saddam Hussein had acquired yellowcake uranium in Niger. His wife, Valerie Plame, was outed as a CIA spy - a form of retaliation that ended her career.

Prosecution and job loss are nothing, though, compared with how the US is treating journalists seeking to cover the conflict in Iraq in an unbiased way. The Committee to Protect Journalists has documented multiple accounts of the US military in Iraq firing upon or threatening to fire upon unembedded (meaning independent) reporters and camera operators from organisations ranging from al-Jazeera to the BBC. While westerners may question the accounts by al-Jazeera, they should pay attention to the accounts of reporters such as the BBC's Kate Adie. In some cases reporters have been wounded or killed, including ITN's Terry Lloyd in 2003. Both CBS and the Associated Press in Iraq had staff members seized by the US military and taken to violent prisons; the news organisations were unable to see the evidence against their staffers.

Over time in closing societies, real news is supplanted by fake news and false documents. Pinochet showed Chilean citizens falsified documents to back up his claim that terrorists had been about to attack the nation. The yellowcake charge, too, was based on forged papers.

You won't have a shutdown of news in modern America - it is not possible. But you can have, as Frank Rich and Sidney Blumenthal have pointed out, a steady stream of lies polluting the news well. What you already have is a White House directing a stream of false information that is so relentless that it is increasingly hard to sort out truth from untruth. In a fascist system, it's not the lies that count but the muddying. When citizens can't tell real news from fake, they give up their demands for accountability bit by bit.

9. Dissent equals treason

Cast dissent as "treason" and criticism as "espionage'. Every closing society does this, just as it elaborates laws that increasingly criminalise certain kinds of speech and expand the definition of "spy" and "traitor". When Bill Keller, the publisher of the New York Times, ran the Lichtblau/Risen stories, Bush called the Times' leaking of classified information "disgraceful", while Republicans in Congress called for Keller to be charged with treason, and rightwing commentators and news outlets kept up the "treason" drumbeat. Some commentators, as Conason noted, reminded readers smugly that one penalty for violating the Espionage Act is execution.

Conason is right to note how serious a threat that attack represented. It is also important to recall that the 1938 Moscow show trial accused the editor of Izvestia, Nikolai Bukharin, of treason; Bukharin was, in fact, executed. And it is important to remind Americans that when the 1917 Espionage Act was last widely invoked, during the infamous 1919 Palmer Raids, leftist activists were arrested without warrants in sweeping roundups, kept in jail for up to five months, and "beaten, starved, suffocated, tortured and threatened with death", according to the historian Myra MacPherson. After that, dissent was muted in America for a decade.

In Stalin's Soviet Union, dissidents were "enemies of the people". National Socialists called those who supported Weimar democracy "November traitors".

And here is where the circle closes: most Americans do not realise that since September of last year - when Congress wrongly, foolishly, passed the Military Commissions Act of 2006 - the president has the power to call any US citizen an "enemy combatant". He has the power to define what "enemy combatant" means. The president can also delegate to anyone he chooses in the executive branch the right to define "enemy combatant" any way he or she wants and then seize Americans accordingly.

Even if you or I are American citizens, even if we turn out to be completely innocent of what he has accused us of doing, he has the power to have us seized as we are changing planes at Newark tomorrow, or have us taken with a knock on the door; ship you or me to a navy brig; and keep you or me in isolation, possibly for months, while awaiting trial. (Prolonged isolation, as psychiatrists know, triggers psychosis in otherwise mentally healthy prisoners. That is why Stalin's gulag had an isolation cell, like Guantánamo's, in every satellite prison. Camp 6, the newest, most brutal facility at Guantánamo, is all isolation cells.)

We US citizens will get a trial eventually - for now. But legal rights activists at the Center for Constitutional Rights say that the Bush administration is trying increasingly aggressively to find ways to get around giving even US citizens fair trials. "Enemy combatant" is a status offence - it is not even something you have to have done. "We have absolutely moved over into a preventive detention model - you look like you could do something bad, you might do something bad, so we're going to hold you," says a spokeswoman of the CCR.

Most Americans surely do not get this yet. No wonder: it is hard to believe, even though it is true. In every closing society, at a certain point there are some high-profile arrests - usually of opposition leaders, clergy and journalists. Then everything goes quiet. After those arrests, there are still newspapers, courts, TV and radio, and the facades of a civil society. There just isn't real dissent. There just isn't freedom. If you look at history, just before those arrests is where we are now.

10. Suspend the rule of law

The John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007 gave the president new powers over the national guard. This means that in a national emergency - which the president now has enhanced powers to declare - he can send Michigan's militia to enforce a state of emergency that he has declared in Oregon, over the objections of the state's governor and its citizens.

Even as Americans were focused on Britney Spears's meltdown and the question of who fathered Anna Nicole's baby, the New York Times editorialised about this shift: "A disturbing recent phenomenon in Washington is that laws that strike to the heart of American democracy have been passed in the dead of night ... Beyond actual insurrection, the president may now use military troops as a domestic police force in response to a natural disaster, a disease outbreak, terrorist attack or any 'other condition'."

Critics see this as a clear violation of the Posse Comitatus Act - which was meant to restrain the federal government from using the military for domestic law enforcement. The Democratic senator Patrick Leahy says the bill encourages a president to declare federal martial law. It also violates the very reason the founders set up our system of government as they did: having seen citizens bullied by a monarch's soldiers, the founders were terrified of exactly this kind of concentration of militias' power over American people in the hands of an oppressive executive or faction.

Of course, the United States is not vulnerable to the violent, total closing-down of the system that followed Mussolini's march on Rome or Hitler's roundup of political prisoners. Our democratic habits are too resilient, and our military and judiciary too independent, for any kind of scenario like that.

Rather, as other critics are noting, our experiment in democracy could be closed down by a process of erosion.

It is a mistake to think that early in a fascist shift you see the profile of barbed wire against the sky. In the early days, things look normal on the surface; peasants were celebrating harvest festivals in Calabria in 1922; people were shopping and going to the movies in Berlin in 1931. Early on, as WH Auden put it, the horror is always elsewhere - while someone is being tortured, children are skating, ships are sailing: "dogs go on with their doggy life ... How everything turns away/ Quite leisurely from the disaster."

As Americans turn away quite leisurely, keeping tuned to internet shopping and American Idol, the foundations of democracy are being fatally corroded. Something has changed profoundly that weakens us unprecedentedly: our democratic traditions, independent judiciary and free press do their work today in a context in which we are "at war" in a "long war" - a war without end, on a battlefield described as the globe, in a context that gives the president - without US citizens realising it yet - the power over US citizens of freedom or long solitary incarceration, on his say-so alone.

That means a hollowness has been expanding under the foundation of all these still- free-looking institutions - and this foundation can give way under certain kinds of pressure. To prevent such an outcome, we have to think about the "what ifs".

What if, in a year and a half, there is another attack - say, God forbid, a dirty bomb? The executive can declare a state of emergency. History shows that any leader, of any party, will be tempted to maintain emergency powers after the crisis has passed. With the gutting of traditional checks and balances, we are no less endangered by a President Hillary than by a President Giuliani - because any executive will be tempted to enforce his or her will through edict rather than the arduous, uncertain process of democratic negotiation and compromise.

What if the publisher of a major US newspaper were charged with treason or espionage, as a rightwing effort seemed to threaten Keller with last year? What if he or she got 10 years in jail? What would the newspapers look like the next day? Judging from history, they would not cease publishing; but they would suddenly be very polite.

Right now, only a handful of patriots are trying to hold back the tide of tyranny for the rest of us - staff at the Center for Constitutional Rights, who faced death threats for representing the detainees yet persisted all the way to the Supreme Court; activists at the American Civil Liberties Union; and prominent conservatives trying to roll back the corrosive new laws, under the banner of a new group called the American Freedom Agenda. This small, disparate collection of people needs everybody's help, including that of Europeans and others internationally who are willing to put pressure on the administration because they can see what a US unrestrained by real democracy at home can mean for the rest of the world.

We need to look at history and face the "what ifs". For if we keep going down this road, the "end of America" could come for each of us in a different way, at a different moment; each of us might have a different moment when we feel forced to look back and think: that is how it was before - and this is the way it is now.

"The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands ... is the definition of tyranny," wrote James Madison. We still have the choice to stop going down this road; we can stand our ground and fight for our nation, and take up the banner the founders asked us to carry.

From Boston: Police Entering Homes Without Search Warrants to Look for Weapons

Okay this is like hunting for the elusive, never found WMD's in Iraq under every sandhill except this is now happening in the neighborhoods of America! All in the name of protecting us from terrorists and terrorism! What next!?!?

In this clip Faux News debates whether or not it's constitutionally correct for officers in Boston to knock on someone's door and request to search their homes for weapons.

Discussions include what implications there may be if you refuse them entrance to your private residence and what would happen if they found things other than weapons, i.e. a bag of pot.

Does this make you feel safer? Are you happy that the Patriot Act is in place protecting you? I don't and I'm not... This is homegrown internal terrorism perpetuated by our own USG officials and I hope that damn misdirected Homeland Security subcommittee group is looking at events like this instead of 9/11 Truthers!

Al-Qaeda and Blackwater: Close Kin?

Al-Qaeda Missing Link (missing link found, see below)

As Kurt Nimmo points out in his article, Al-Qaeda, the Muslim Blackwater, "the CIA-ISI cobbled together terrorist group going by the handle “al-Qaeda” is akin to Blackwater, the American mercenary corporation."

This actually shouldn't be too surprising or a revelation as Blackwater has demonstrated themselves to be USG-sanctioned terrorists. But isn't it always nice to keep reading it?

Nimmo goes on to point out, as others have countless times before, that Al-Qaeda was formed and founded by U.S. dollars and that Al-Qaeda "is a Frankenstein manufactured by the United States."

And Frankenstein is a good way to describe them... Even Frankenstein couldn't help himself once he was created. He just kept blundering along, creating mayhem and destruction in his path... And, unfortunately for Frankenstein, the creator has to eventually "do away" with him because he realizes that he has created something that he cannot control - he has created a "monster."

And, oh, surprise, Al-Qaeda members are joining for money more than ideology and are no different than the retired SEAL and merc soldiers that are joining Blackwater for the same.

Many are looking for more than what they have and money sure can talk. Whoever thinks that money is not the root of most if not all evil is full of shit...

The Security & Prosperity Partnership: A Mini-Look: What's the Scoop?

The Security and Prosperity Partnership and other USG offices keep telling us that they aren't working towards an NAU but a symbol similar to the SPP logo was seen on these officers shoulders in California:

Now if the SPP states in their Myths vs. Facts section of their website that they are only about "dialogue" then why would there be men walking around in uniforms playing private police with an SPP-similar symbol on their shoulders? Seems odd to me as that's definitely more than dialogue...

What do you think?

Emergency Rule Imposed in Pakistan

So Pakistan's President Musharraf has declared a "mini-martial law", as stated by Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Of course PM Bhutto is quite concerned as she just celebrated her big return from exile and was looking forward to election time!

Why was "emergency rule" imposed? Well, Musharraf declared emergency rule because of the "growing extremism, increasing lawlessness and an 'interfering judiciary'.

The 'interfering judiciary' - the Pakistani Supreme Court led by
Justice Chaudhry - refused to acknowledge the emergency order but that didn't hold Musharraf back. He has his own government to place the stamp of approval on his actions.

Of course, the U.S. has been brutal on Pakistan for this move with Condi Rice saying that it is "very regrettable" and a Pentagon spokesperson stating that there are no plans to suspend military aid. No that would be way too harsh...

This bears watching though... I bet the Bush regime is behind this one all the way. Musharraf's excuses are way too flimsy for me. There is much more to this than meets the eye.

Remember: Pakistan is another U.S. buddy country and buddies take care of each other.

Terrorist Israel: Criminal Human Rights Violator

This week, the end of October and beginning of November 2007, Israel has been stepping up their bombing of the Gaza area, over 50 different occurrences, in an effort to force the inhabitants of the area to leave. Mind you these are not soldiers being attacked, these are residents = families = husbands, wives, children.

Rockets launched "successfully" by Israel obliterated the village of Hebron, killing more than 15 in several attacks, and injuring more than 30. These numbers include the disabled, women, children, a journalist, and a human rights worker. More than 79 people have been kidnapped by Israeli troops, which includes 6 children and 2 women. School children on their way to school have been fired upon by Israeli troops.

The Israeli government continues to promote the illegal settlement of Palestinian lands and encourages Israeli citizens to attack the residents already residing there. Attacks on Palestinian residents occur regularly with stones and bottles as weapons.

As Israel moves into Palestine it has declared that Palestinian homes were built illegally and without license and then proceeds to bulldoze their residences forcing the residents to flee. Needless to say they are then homeless.

Since the Gaza has been declared an "enemy entity" in September, Israel has been ensuring that goods and services, to include medicine, do not reach the needs of the people of Gaza. Prices have risen more than 500% making it extremely difficult for the people to survive day-to-day.

Israel is also in the process of building a wall - the annexation or apartheid wall - through the West Bank. This wall is illegal and against international law. Palestinians have been peacefully protesting the wall but Israeli troops respond to them with violence by shooting them with rubber-coated metal bullets or lobbing tear gas or sound bombs into the crowd.

These are criminal acts by a criminal government. It's horrific, inhuman and, plain and simple, a direct violation of basic human rights. The Palestinian people DO NOT deserve this type of treatment.

For Americans this should be a chilling, telling story of what could be expected of your own government. Yes, really.

Consider: The U.S. fully supports Israel in their demonic, criminal ways. George W. Bush has already gone down the path of eliminating the American citizens' basic rights to a fair trial and removed protection rights under the Geneva Convention.

The U.S. government can certainly decide that certain groups, within the U.S., are no longer recognizable as U.S. (or NAU) citizens and can declare "war" on those groups - let's call them "unclean" groups to easily differentiate.

The U.S. or NAU can also decide that those areas that those unclean groups live in are best suited for other groups of people so it will clean out the unclean areas. It will either kill or drive the unclean people to a chosen location.

You think that is too far-fetched? Then you wait and see.

You are mentally being prepped for these things now. I'd venture to say that most people believe that the Palestinian people deserve what they are getting so therefore they support these actions; some people don't understand the whole situation so are hesitant to state or form an opinion; and only a few really understand and grasp what is going on... Am I right?

Also, there is great hesitancy to discuss the issue at ALL in our news. Why? Because Israel is our ally, our buddy, our pal, our cohort in crime and punishments, and the U.S. has its' hands deep into Israel's pockets and vice versa.

It's just a matter of time now...

Welcome to the New World Order.

The New World Order Pitbulls: BLACKWATER USA

Blackwater USA.

Was the name derived from the Doobie Brothers song of the same title? Was Erik a Doobie Brothers fan? I really like that Doobie Brothers song but this organization has kinda changed the whole concept of the tune now...

Or was there something more sinister in the mind of Erik Prince when he sat down and crafted up the organization? What did Blackwater, as a name, mean to him? And who is Erik Prince anyway?

Meet Erik Prince, a former Navy SEAL and the founder of Blackwater USA, who lived a privileged lifestyle as the son of a successful automotive industry entrepreneur. In his youth he was active in his high school and participated in extracurricular sports activities like soccer and track and field.

Erik is known for going to great lengths to stay out of the limelight so in July 2006 the Virginian-Pilot "held" an interview via email. He's been called a right-wing fundamentalist Christian and is a, supposed, staunch supporter of the Republican party. Recently Erik, along with his company, was tagged for tax evasion.

Investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill is a very vocal critic of private military contractors and he has written many articles about Blackwater. He even has a book out titled Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army. In the following video Jeremy provides more background into Erik and Blackwater:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQiZvtuLl-k&NR=1

So Erik decided that Blackwater was the answer to all of America's problems... All on his own. Pretty smart guy. Well he had the cash and a couple of buddies to start up the operation. He then established the headquarters and training grounds for Blackwater USA in the backwoods and swamplands of North Carolina and began recruiting and churning out mercenary soldiers. Seems like the Christian thing to do, eh?

www.bintjbeil.com/.../images/blackwater1.jpg

Blackwater considers themselves to be a "professional military, law enforcement, security, peacekeeping, and stability operations firm who provides turnkey solutions." To me, they seem to be efficient at creating lean, mean, killing machines par excellence at a reduced human life rate to the USG. I guess we're supposed to be getting a bargain according to some estimates... Though some argue that the mercs get paid too much. No one's ever happy!

www.newsobserver.com/.../20041024_blackwater.jpg

Hell, in reality, it seems no one really knows how much we, the people, are actually paying them for their deadly services. Most of the figures I read are estimates. No one seems to really know how many of them are getting killed in battle. Again, estimates... No one seems to really know many are actually deployed throughout the world or where they are actually deployed. Estimates, estimates, estimates, guesses, guesses, guesses....

These highly-trained mercenary soldiers are armed with lethal high-powered weapons and high-powered contracts with Washington D.C. They are even allowed to work in international countries without all the proper documentation usually required for contracting work of this kind. Seems that a lot of corners are cut in Bush's neo-con administration...

Blackwater, itself, has been called Bush's mercenaries, Bush's private army, Bush's praetorian guard, and a host of other unwritable stuff. Blackwater soldiers are mostly viewed as a renegade mercenary force best known for their actions and operations in Iraq.

They act like "shoot-em-up, take-no-prisoners" types that flaunt their power and arrogance even in the face of the U.S. military. Many soldiers, both U.S. and international, have stories and tales of their encounters with Blackwater mercs. And these guys are supposed to be on our side??

www.change-links.org/blackwater.jpg

Who actually hired them? I guess the U.S. State Department, or maybe Bush or someone on his neo-con staff, but no one seems to really know... Comforting. Supposedly it was via a real bidding process (yeah right!). Then how come no one really knows? How many other groups are there like this around the U.S. that would qualify for bidding on jobs like this? Chilling thought...!

In 2005 J. Cofer Black aka Ambassador Cofer Black, former Director of the CIA's Counterterrorist Center (CTC), joined up with Erik's organization as the Vice Chairman of Blackwater USA. Ambassador Black is also the Chairman of Total Intelligence Solutions. There's an interesting board at TIS so be sure to check it out. All kinds of intelligence and military involvement, right cozy group they are... They are probably all Christians that go to church every Sunday, too.

dusteye.files.wordpress.com/2007/02/blackwate...

And things are so MiXeD-uP, as they are under the NWO and the Bush neo-con government, that no one knows when these guys will appear - they just show up! In places like Iraq and Afghanistan. And New Orleans (see below). With Hummers and Expeditions and helicopters, all black - but of course! - and they are heavily, heavily armed.

And they seem to be pretty trigger-happy. And they state to whomever might be brave enough to ask them that they have special immunities and can engage in deadly force, with permission of the USG.

Ma'am, we are here to protect you. Drop that skillet now or I'll shoot!
www.tulanelink.com/tulanelink/blackwater2.jpg

In 2005 Jeremy Scahill wrote an article about Blackwater in New Orleans and the ominous signs of Blackwater on American soil at that time.

If you think Iraq is too far away to consider their behavior and actions concerning than do your own research on New Orleans and Blackwater after Hurricane Katrina. Or re-read Scahills' New Orleans article. Or just pay more attention!

I'm not comforted by any of this and neither are other people. Watch this latest
video by Jeremy Scahill on these killer bad boys from NC:

Blackwater: Shadow Army

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqM4tKPDlR8

And Blackwater mercs are "working" more and more on American soil and looking to set-up more contracts within the U.S. brrrr Would you want these guys knocking on your door at any time? Do you think that they would knock??

And with the NAU a hop-skip-and-jump away (2010) they'll be all over Mexico, Canada and U.S. soil. And with the performances we have seen in Iraq, I say again, would you want these merc soldiers around your property? Your kids? Would you want them stopping you at a stop sign, in the grocery store or along a highway? BRRRRRR They give me the creeps...

weblogs.elearning.ubc.ca/ross/archives/~_blac...

And don't think you can grab your gun and protect yourself. Or that because you are young or female or elderly or sick you're exempt.
If you are in the way or in the line of a Blackwater gun scope you're dead. They demonstrated that over and over in Iraq with innocent citizens... And they'll be stomping all over U.S. soil...???

If you know anything about the NWO and Bilderberg you know that reduction of world population is a must so organizations like Blackwater can help them achieve their goal quickly. No conscious, no remorse, no questions - they just do it.

FEMA: What Those Initials Really Stand For...

FEMA = F**k Every Member of America

If you had any illusions about FEMA you shouldn't have any now... We watched our fellow Americans in New Orleans get the middle finger from the feds and FEMA after Hurricane Katrina wiped most of it out and now the people in Southern California are being mind-played with, as well.

A sickly, staged show was played out on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 where six FEMA employees played at being reporters, asking questions of FEMA Deputy Administrator Harvey Johnson. It was all fun and games for them as they patted themselves on the back for the wonderful job they were doing there with Harvey Johnson even remarking, "I'm very happy with FEMA's response."

Knock, knock - hello? Anything in those skulls of yours? Don't you realize that you are playing with people's lives??? Dumb shits.. Here's your stupid sign!

Bush/Cheney Impeachment: Not Open for Discussion in Congress

“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.”
-- George W. Bush, Aug. 5, 2004

Ralph Nader attended the Next Steps for the Peace Movement held at the Bus Boys and Poets club in Washington, D.C. on October 11, 2007. Other attendees were Kevin Zeese, an attorney, a peace and justice activist, and Director of Democracy Rising; Tina Richards, CEO of Grassroots America; and David Swanson, Washington Director of Democracy.com and co-founder of the web site, AfterDowningStreet.org.

In the following video Ralph talks about the number of towns in the North East area of America, "dozens", that have passed impeachment resolutions for Bush and Cheney. Charges include "at least" 5 counts of high crimes and misdemeanors, illegal wire-tapping, the use of torture, and arrests without charges followed by imprisonment.

It's interesting to note that you don't hear about this on the news... That nearly 2/3rd's of an American region is demanding impeachment of these two crime bosses and not one line on any news station! It is such an apathetic society out there these days...

Anyways, the impeachment demand was sent to a Democratic congressman, John ***(I can't catch the name), and Ralph reviews a letter received from him. You have to hear the congressman's response to believe it. Couple minute video, not surprising, just disappointing...

America: Fascist, Totalitarian Maybe, Definitely Not Democratic

I laughed the first time I heard my teenage son tell me that America was really a fascist country. I truly believed that I lived in the land of democracy and that fascism belonged in the history books and only happened in countries like Italy and Germany, not in America. That was before I woke up to 9/11 and began my journey of learning.

...And I found that learning about the deceit and cover-up of 9/11 was only the "tip of the iceberg." It has involved hours of research (it is all out there - just search the web using available search engines such as Google or Ask) to find out about what was really going on around me in this country that I was born and raised in.

Since then it has been a roller coaster ride where I've felt my stomach drop to the floor and my head nearly hit the ceiling... It has also been depressing because I did not realize how utterly corrupt our government really is - all the way around - in every nook and cranny. It was bad, getting worse and G.W. Bush and his crime bunch have made it sickening...

With George W. Bush as President we now have welcomed in The New World Order (NWO), the North American Union (NAU), Project for the New American Century (PNAC), Homeland Security (DHS), privitized military forces (Blackwater), the Patriot Act, loss of our Constitutional, Bill of Rights and Geneva rights, increasing and encouraged police brutality, endless red tape, no accountability by the President or his staff, terrorism perpetuated by the White House and not by outside forces, war crimes committed by USG personnel though they can never be prosecuted for them, murder of innocent U.S. citizens, murder of innocent world citizens, unnecessary deaths in our U.S. Armed Forces, a seemingly endless war on a nameless and unknown enemy, probable irreparable destabilization of our economy, decimation of our Social Security system, and the list can go on but my stomach just hit the floor again...

...And after researching and finding out that my son was, indeed, pretty "right on" and realizing, again, that the youth of America looks to be smarter than I am, I then discover that I have been paying the IRS with my hard earned cash when I did not have to. That was like the loop in the roller coaster ride and my stomach and my head went in two different directions. Will the deceit from our once-precious USG never stop? My head is beginning to hurt...

I was amazed to find out that there is no law, keyword law, that tells me I have to pay the IRS a penny. These are things you take for granted and, I suspect, that that is what the USG expects - that we will just take it for granted that there is one. Boy, have we all been played the fools! The USG said it was so and we bowed down and paid homage - without verification - just blind devotion. No wonder justice wears a blindfold! Justice is blind - to the rights of the people!

So it looks like we have illegal seizures by the IRS and all this property should be returned to its owners. That's the picture I'm getting here. And when I heard the story of Joe Lewis, famous boxer, I wanted to puke. Of course you never hear that stuff until after they are dead and gone...

Well, here is a GREAT video that not only talks about the newest acronyms to our language - NWO, PNAC, NAU - but it also provides a pretty thorough investigation and look-see into the IRS and the lack of the law.

This video, America: Freedom to Fascism, was hosted, produced and directed by Aaron Russo, who sadly passed away from cancer in August 2007. Aaron Russo is best known for producing The Rose, with Bette Midler, and Trading Places, with Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. Aaron Russo is Mad as Hell

This full length video was available on Google but it is no longer there (?) so the link I was going to post is no longer valid. There is a 26-minute version available but you really need to see the full length one and hear it all. Please take the time to watch this one...

Portland and TOPOFF 4: 10/18's Bomb Scare a Diversionary Tactic?

Some interesting speculations bouncing around on the web on the Portland 10/18 bomb scare that was eventually played down by the media. So I've been thinking about it myself...

Short of the story is that a vehicle or vehicles (see article links below) used in the TOPOFF 4 exercise parked near the Doubletree Inn in downtown Portland was alerted on by bomb sniffing dogs three times. The reason the dogs were around in the first place was because they were checking things out in advance of Chertoff's arrival - making sure things were "a-okay" for the big man's stay at the Doubletree. Lo and behold a dog found a suspicious circumstance (funny how these things seem to keep happening) and one thing led to another. The situation was played down eventually because, well, the vehicle(s) was used in the exercise or was driven by someone that had participated in the exercise or something like that as no one seems to clearly know but it doesn't really add up very well...

I'm wondering...:
1. How many vehicles were really involved? One makes more sense to me but in some cases I read several...
2. Why did the incident take place before 2 p.m. while the exercise was still in progress and people were still participating but the vehicle was utilized by an exercise participant and it just so happened to be parked at the same hotel that Chertoff was checking into to...?
3. Why did this happen on the same day that Chertoff was to arrive?
4. How did the vehicle get so close to the actual exercise activities that elements used in the bombing portions of the exercise would have gotten "baked" into it? Seems odd that your private/rental vehicle would get that close to the material...
5. If the individual driving the vehicle had participated in bombing activities weren't they wearing protective clothing and going through detox before they left the site? Wasn't that what the exercise was supposed to be about?
6. Why did they shut down the metro rail service (MET) and several blocks surrounding the hotel? Is that normal procedure? I've read of other bomb scares and I can't recall that they've shut so many services down and closed such a large area. Usually it's localized - what did they really know?
7. Why did this incident occur the same day that the Port Arthur refinery had an explosion? Is that merely a coincidence? And gas prices rose almost immediately... Amazing stuff, that.

Is it possible that the bomb incident was a diversionary tactic to actually dismantle a bomb? (see email conversation links below) It's an interesting perspective and one that I'm not discounting. Especially considering all the activities that have occurred to date - Bent Spear, the U.S.'s Iranian spy satellite that was brought down that ended up in Peru - too numerous to list but all covered up or quickly dismissed... Maybe there were too many eyes on Portland so plans were changed?? I'd like to think so...

There is also some chatter that the Pakistan suicide bombing on Thursday was a planned event and that the three (TX, OR and Pakistan) were all linked. Hmmm I wonder... Certainly wouldn't discount that one too quickly either.

Pretty soon we can purchase our tickets online at Ticketmaster outlets, get our popcorn and drinks and watch these events happen - all while the USG officials run around us telling us it isn't real or planned or they don't know anything about it or someone else did it or that we're just a bunch of conspiracy "theorists" or psychotic left-wingers or right-wingers or overzealous U.S. Constitution/Bill of Rights supporters... Well, maybe they are right as I now hear the Twilight Zone overlaid by God Bless America music playing in my head so I guess it's time to go...

In the following video Alex interviews and talks with Ginny Ross of the Oregon Truth Alliance and shares images of the exercise activity. This is a good video especially since Alex introduces us to the different activities, talks to a variety of individuals throughout and provides personal comments and insights. It also includes Ginny's question to Chertoff about 9/11 and whether or not a drill was ensuing when it went live (false flag event). This video is lengthy but highly recommended.

ATTENTION ALL:

The information below has been sent me by my editor. It originated from an inside source at the British Petroleum refinery in Texas City, Texas. The sudden scheduling of this live terror drill -- and a deliberate attempt to keep it from the public -- leads me to consider the hasty exercise a distinct threat for a 911-2B attack.

Tomorrow morning, I will be doing a live interview on the exercise in Texas City and Operation TOPOFF in Portland from 8-10 a.m., CST: http://www.k-talk.com/

Leon,

Thank you for taking this email. I hope that it is not too late to have it posted as news, as I believe it is, considering the goings on in Portland Oregon this week with Operation TOPOFF.
Today's message was the first message regarding such activities being performed around the BP Refinery and surrounding Texas City. Of course, I owe my knowledge of this site to Captain Eric H. May. Also, it is because of him that I decided to forward this email to you.

I have tried to contact Captain May, but to no avail. I have been wanting to talk to him about the Houston/Galveston area refineries and chemical plants, as a result of his posted claims to have known when certain "accidents" were to have taken place. One accident in particular that he mentioned was the March 23, 2005 explosion at BP Texas City. I was, and still am, employed there with Jacobs Engineering. My friend and supervisor, Arthur G. Ramos-Vietnam field medic, was one of the fifteen killed that day. And I was hoping to draw further information from Captain May surrounding said event.

If at all possible, in addition to the acceptance of this message, would you forward this message to Captain May as well? I would very much like to discuss these and other issues with him.

* "Live" security/terrorism exercise - Thursday October 18

On October 4, 2007, BP and other clients of the Port of Texas City participated in a major "security/terrorism" table-top exercise with federal and local government agencies (The FBI, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), City of Texas City, County of Galveston, etc.) at the Doyle Convention Center. While this exercise was in progress at the Doyle Center, the BP Texas City Incident Management Team activated and ran a drill at the refinery paralleling the same terrorism scenarios.

This Thursday October 18, 2007, BP and other clients of the Port of Texas City will participate in a "live" security/terrorism exercise with federal and local agencies in the Port of Texas City.

Beginning Tuesday, October 16, and Wednesday, October 17, the public media will be informed of this exercise in order to properly advise the citizens of the City of Texas City about the exercise. The exercise will be conducted from the early morning hours of October 18, until noon on that day. All persons entering the port on October 18 will be reminded of the exercise in progress.

Normal operations will continue at our BP Texas City marine facilities without disruptions throughout the exercise. Exercise Controllers will be present at all times to monitor the scene. FBI SWAT & Bomb Techs, Texas City Police Department SWAT, Galveston County Sheriff Dept. Marine Units, and DHS-USCG will be participating in this major event.

All employees should continue to go about their normal duties during the exercise, with safety being the primary focus of every individual at the site.

Portland: Nation on Edge: Operation TOPOFF 4

From the Lone Star Iconoclast out of Crawford, Texas (yep Bush's hometown) comes this well-written article by another military officer. I hesitate in saying 'ex' or 'retired' because many of our 'ex' and 'retired' military have reactivated themselves back to active duty status. It's a radically changing environment...

Largest Civil Defense Exercise In American History Begins This Week

PORTLAND, Oregon — The largest civil defense exercise in American history — Operation TOPOFF — is scheduled to run Oct. 15-19 in three locations: Portland, Ore. Phoenix, Ariz., and the U.S. territory of Guam.

The multi-agency exercise encompasses over 15,000 individuals and, according to the Federal government, will feature a "surprise" scenario whereby a hypothetical "Radioactive Dispersal Device," or conventional explosive that disperses radiation, goes off unexpectedly in a metropolitan area. Federal officials say that the exercises will test their ability to react to simultaneous terrorist attacks to determine the impact on emergency resources.

At the same time, the U.S. military’s Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) is running its "Vigilant Shield 08" exercise, which, among other things, contemplates sending Federal troops into disaster zones to bolster local first responders.

Among the Federal agencies taking part in the national-level exercise are FEMA, the FBI, the CIA, the National Guard, USNORTHCOM, NORAD, the National Reconnaissance Office, and other elements of the Department of Defense. In all, more than 275 organizations are expected to be involved.

According to government sources, the Portland exercise may involve a "dirty bomb" being detonated on a steel bridge to disrupt traffic, along with perhaps attacks involving a network of suicide bombers to erupt in various areas.

Similar bogus attacks are anticipated in Phoenix, Guam, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere, as the scope of the national-level exercises are linked internationally.

While some residents of Portland and other "target" areas are concerned about elements of the exercise "going live," local law enforcement personnel are viewing the exercise as a learning opportunity.

Assistant Chief Brian Martianek, in charge of overall exercise operations for the Portland Police Bureau, told The Iconoclast that he is not concerned about a false flag event happening in Portland. He says that while his department tries to think about every issue it can imagine, it does not have a person tasked with focusing upon the possibility of high-level insider treason. He says he hopes to learn things from TOPOFF that will protect the community.

Senior Public Affairs Officer Kerry Dugan, Portland Office of Emergency Management, acknowledged awareness of 9-11-related theories being mentioned by the news media during the past 1½ months, but said that in his TOPOFF-related planning meetings no one has talked about 9-11 truth movement issues.

Dugan indicated that he could not answer whether his organization has a counterintelligence capability to deal with a potential false flag threat.

Likewise, Sgt. Brian Schmautz, Public Information Officer for the Portland Police Bureau, declined to comment on internal counterintelligence capabilities, but termed "conspiracy theories" inappropriately "political."

Public Information Officer for Portland Fire and Rescue Lt. Allen Oswalt said that he was not prepared to discuss the 9-11 truth movement, as he had never heard of it; but indicated that he views his interactions with the Department of Homeland Security and other federal personnel as a big positive to improve preparedness. He explained that it helps people at lower levels more rapidly draw upon the resources and expertise of people at the Federal level.

Webster Tarpley, author of 911 Synthetic Terror: Made in the U.S., said on a recent talk show (see link to transcript below)that most official government explanations of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon are nonsense and charged that the "original 9-11 was a war provocation coming out of the bowels of the CIA, the Pentagon, the NSA, and so forth."

Tarpley explained that rather than "prevent" terrorist events, military exercises tend to "coincide" with them. He has counted approximately 25 separate drills under way during the attacks of 9-11.

"The only way you can conduit or bootleg an illegal operation through much of the government is essentially to do it under the cover of a drill." He noted that three drills — TOPOFF 3 (U.S. term), Atlantic Blue (British term), and Triple Play (Canda’s version) — envisioned a 7-7-2005 scenario with a bomb in the London subway on the same day as an international conference in Britain. That scenario went live, killing 52 commuters and injuring 700.

For residents of Portland, one of the best places to learn about possible local false flag threats is at the Portland Indymedia web site . Many law enforcement personnel do not seem to be taking full advantage of this alternative media yet. Instead, they still seem to rely on major local print media which tends to remain silent on "inside job"-related issues.

Lt. Jason Gates, Lieutenant of Operations for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Department (includes most of the City of Portland), said that he has surfed Portland Indymedia and other web sites, but only with the desire to identify groups that openly threaten violence or have a track record of using illegal violence. These include certain earth liberation and animal liberation front groups.

While Gates says he does not believe in conspiracy theories, he is willing to keep an open mind and is not prejudiced against all Muslims or "anti-government" right-wingers.

Gates explained that his department does not have any real counterintelligence capability, with the exception of his own web surfing activities.

Gates noted that in recent years his department has received federal funding for chemical and biological protective gear that every policeman now carries in his car. Each policeman also receives eight hours of training a year to prepare for a terrorist weapon of mass destruction (WMD).

Sgt. David Thomson, Chief Information Officer of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department (west of Portland), told The Iconoclast that his department has no people on staff who look at counterintelligence issues. Regarding TOPOFF, his personnel have not been told anything about how it might get converted into a martial law scenario, he said.

Josh Thomas, Media Relations Manager, Marine and Industrial Development, Port of Portland, told The Iconoclast that his department recently received radiological devices that are fixed in place. They can measure radiation in cargoes being trucked out of the Marine terminals. However, he is not aware of portable detectors that can measure a possible nuke sitting inside containers on the docks.

Lt. Cmdr. Gary Ross, Public Affairs Officer for Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) located at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs, Colo., said that he has not been exposed to the 9-11 truth movement. He explained that Vigilant Shield 08, running concurrently with TOPOFF, has an aspect that involves the introduction of Federal troops.

This, he said, is in support of civilian agencies for the purpose of saving lives.

This is not to be construed as part of some kind of "martial law" clamp down scenario, he said.

Ross also noted that the exercise ties in participants on all levels from cabinet members and governors all the way down to local police, emergency medical services, and firemen. The TOPOFF command umbrella run by the Department of Homeland Security includes NorthCom, NORAD, and other U.S. military activities. Everyone under the umbrella has been told to expect surprise "inserts," he explained.

Homeland Insecurity

Department of Homeland Security personnel, when questioned by The Iconoclast, were evasive, not returning phone calls or following up on questions asked by e-mail after the department suggested this method for obtaining answers to questions prior to newspaper deadline.

However, it has been confirmed that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff will personally oversee the exercise in Portland and that top officials of the state and city will be involved.

Based on Internet chatter, many Oregon residents are uneasy about Chertoff’s presence because of National Security Presidental Directive #51 (NSPD-51) that President Bush wrote into law in May. It states that in the time of a National emergency, the president can declare himself a dictator and anything he or his administration decrees necessary or essential to national security will automatically become law, without Congressional approval.

Chertoff rapidly rose to power as an appointee of Presidents H.W. and G.W. Bush — first, as a U.S. attorney in New Jersey (1990-1994), then as assistant Attorney General at the Department of Justice criminal division heading up the investigation of 9-11 (2001-2003). He served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals and as a federal prosecutor before taking over the Department of Homeland Security.

Chertoff also helped write many of the controversial portions of the PATRIOT Act and other laws that even conservative Republicans believe are unnecessary police state infringements of the Bill of Rights and Constitutional guarantees of U.S. citizens. Chertoff was consulted by the CIA about torture and the renditions of terror suspects to other countries for torture-related purposes.

Some Oregonians are worried that Chertoff’s presence might be an indication of a problem with the exercises, due to the nature of his previous governmental activities.
