So Pakistan's President Musharraf has declared a "mini-martial law", as stated by Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Of course PM Bhutto is quite concerned as she just celebrated her big return from exile and was looking forward to election time!
Why was "emergency rule" imposed? Well, Musharraf declared emergency rule because of the "growing extremism, increasing lawlessness and an 'interfering judiciary'.
The 'interfering judiciary' - the Pakistani Supreme Court led by Justice Chaudhry - refused to acknowledge the emergency order but that didn't hold Musharraf back. He has his own government to place the stamp of approval on his actions.
Of course, the U.S. has been brutal on Pakistan for this move with Condi Rice saying that it is "very regrettable" and a Pentagon spokesperson stating that there are no plans to suspend military aid. No that would be way too harsh...
This bears watching though... I bet the Bush regime is behind this one all the way. Musharraf's excuses are way too flimsy for me. There is much more to this than meets the eye.
Remember: Pakistan is another U.S. buddy country and buddies take care of each other.
